Wicker Park (Good)
I watched this one on DVD the other day. Actually, I watched it again the other day as well. The fact that I would watch a movie more than once is at least something of an indicator that the movie was worth watching, although rare exceptions can occur. In this case, the former was true. Wicker Park was an intriguing time-play of a film, not unlike Memento, but not as disturbing. The mystery of the plot was slowly unravelled using a liberal application of flashbacks, sometimes to the distant past, sometimes to a day or hour prior. In this manner, we were given moments of surprising revelation that culminated in a forehead-smacking finale as everything fell into place. More of a character study, this movie followed the quest of a young man as he scoured the city searching for a woman who suddenly and inexplicably disappeared from his life two years earlier. Early in the story our main man encountered someone who reminded him of this woman, who also happened to be the love of his life. Armed with fresh obsession, he abanondoned nigh unto reason to find this girl, but what he found in the process was even stranger than he thought. Okay, that sounds like a by-line, but I don’t want to give away too much. Basically, what we’ve got is an above-average movie with an intriguing plot. It’s not all roses - the guy’s treatment of his fiancĂ© is wishy-washy, and his pursuit of his former love borders on stalking, but that just makes him a bit more colourful. Rent this one. Once.
